Pedistal base?

Most bench plans call for the standard 4 leg base, with bottom runners. I know these are time-tested bases, but I'm considering a pedistal style, with ONE leg per side, Tennon'd to wide bottom runners, a one large stretcher in the middle of the span. D. Marks bench is this way, and it seems to have a smaller footprint then the 4 post designs.

Thoughts? Pro's / Con's?

Place for Pics?

Hi All. I was wondering if there's a good place to post pictures of benches both existing and in progress. I'm currently completing the base of my bench and would like to show it off a little to those who might appreciate it. I'm also looking for more ideas on tail vises, and pictures help alot.

Thoughts?

Hey,

Just starting out in all this. Been collecting info from all over - books, magazines, the net, microfilm etc. From time to time terms come up that I am not familiar with. Is there a woodworking terminolgy dictionary on the net somewhere? In the meantime, when refering to lumber, what is "5/4" "8/4" etc. etc. ?

To see a woodworking board on the ez system. My name is Bobby and I dabble in the shavings a bit for a hobby and also it helps supplement my antique business. I make pretty much anything and work mostly in oak and walnut. Workbench....you don't even want to know!
